More Images (1) LUBIPROSTONE (Amitiza) is used to treat chronic constipation. Lubiprostone helps to relieve the symptoms of constipation such as discomfort, bloating, straining and hard stools. Generic lubiprostone capsules are not available.
Your health care provider needs to know if you have any of these conditions:
abdominal pain
a history of bowel obstruction or adhesions
a history of stool (fecal) impaction
cancer or tumor in abdomen, intestine, or stomach
diarrhea
inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn's disease
an unusual reaction to Lubiprostone, other medicines, foods, dyes, or preservatives
pregnant or trying to get pregnant
breast-feeding
Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible:
severe or prolonged diarrhea
new or worsening stomach pain
Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your prescriber or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome):
headache
mild diarrhea or loose stools
nausea
See your health care professional for regular check-ups and to assess if you need to continue lubiprostone.
The following drugs may interact with Amitiza®:
some medicines may cause constipation and may oppose the best action of lubiprostone
medicines for diarrhea
Tell your prescriber or health care professional about all other medicines you are taking, including non-prescription medicines, nutritional supplements, or herbal products. Also tell your prescriber or health care professional if you are a frequent user of drinks with caffeine or alcohol, if you smoke, or if you use illegal drugs. These may affect the way your medicine works. Check with your health care professional before stopping or starting any of your medicines.
How should this medicine be used?
Take Lubiprostone by mouth with food. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often than directed.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
What if I miss a dose?
If you miss a dose of Lubiprostone, just skip that dose. Wait until your next dose, and take only that dose. Do not take double or extra doses.
